Big Sports Weekend Down on the Farm

Stanford University is hosting the 110th annual Big Game in football (University of California, Berkeley (CAL) and the Stanford Cardinal) today.  The kick-off is at 4:00 p.m., but tailgating will begin much earlier in the day.  Click below to re-live Joe Starkey’s famous broadcast of the 1982 Big Game where he says, “Oh my God, the most amazing, sensational, traumatic, heart rending… exciting thrilling finish in the history of college football! California has won…the Big Game…over Stanford.”

Today is a busy day on the Stanford campus as Stanford is also hosting the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships at the Avery pool complex.  The University of Southern California will play Loyola Marymount University in the first semifinal game beginning at 12:00 p.m.  The second semifinal game begins at 1:45 p.m. and will pit the University of California, Berkeley against Navy.  It’s likely that the championship game (which will be played on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.) will  be a rematch between last year’s finalists, Cal and USC.  Cal, the current defending national champion, won that game 7-6 on a last second shot.  Go Bears!

Update:  Cal lost the Big game 20-13 but won the NCAA men’s Water Polo title for the 13th time by beating USC 7-6.
